Hey yogis, I hope you’re ready to learn about the first chakra the root chakra. Known in sanskrit as Muladhara it is one of the seven primary chakras according to Hindu tantrism. Muladhara is symbolized by a red lotus flower. This chakra is located at the base of the spine- which is why it’s known as the grounding chakra. It connects us to our sense of groundedness and survival instinct.
This is the chakra you want to focus on first when starting your healing journey.
The root chakra’s element is Earth. So a big part of clearing, healing and strengthening is practiced outside in nature. For me my daily yoga practices are done at John Stokes Park next to my apartment complex. In yogic traditions it is most important to stabilize this chakra first. So lets talk about what you experience when this chakra is over-active, under-active and imbalanced.
Over-active Root Chakra Symptoms Include
- anger, annoyance, aggression
- becoming dependent on the security from other people
- very difficult for you to accept change
- may become very materialistic or impulsive
Under-active Root Chakra Symptoms Include
- feeling disconected to the world around you
- feeling disorganized
- lack focus
- become afraid and anxious
- lack of stamina
Imbalanced Root Chakra Symptoms Include
- weight loss/gain
- poor immune system
- irritable bowel syndrome

Crystal Healing: For Muladhara the crystals you want to keep around you are…
- Smokey Quartz (I have this stone as a necklace and I wear it more often than other crystals I have.)
- Red Jasper/Jasper
For crystal healing you want to keep the crystal on you when you leave for school or work. Keeping it in your pocket or in your purse. Then during your yoga practice you should have the crystals on your mat.
Not only is crystal healing important but so is the food that you put into your body during this time of healing. You want to eat red foods like beets, apples, cherries, pomegranate, watermelon, and my favorite strawberries. I have created a root chakra healing smoothie.
To start- on the left I have Agave Nectar, Raw Fit High Protein for Weight Loss and Chia Seeds. For my liquid in this smoothie I will be using Ripple Dairy-Free Pea Protein Milk. Below I have all the ingredients (except the plant based milk of course). I use a ripe banana and frozen strawberries. Strawberries are the chakra clearing food in this recipe so I recommend throwing in a ton of strawberries.
There is no measuring in my recipe because I work with what I feel will taste good and work in my body like food should.

I have also created a quick 10 minute yoga sequence to target healing and strengthening your root chakra. You can do this flow any time of day but I suggest flowing in the morning to start your day grounded- filling you with positive energy to continue throughout your day with.
Each week I am going to focus on one chakra. This week it has been the root chakra. I want you yogis to do this yoga sequence every morning for at least 7 days straight. Keep at least one of the crystals I listed above on you at all times. Then for the smoothie I want you to eat it for breakfast after your yoga flow, as a mid-morning pick me up, or even as a post-workout meal.
